Lisbon in the Rhythm
of Jazz and Flavor
Somewhere in one of the side streets of Bairro Alto, where the glow of streetlights intertwines with the warm breath of the night, hides Black Trumpet – a restaurant that is more than just a place for dinner. It is a theater of flavors, art, and sounds that blend in infinite harmony.
RESTAURANT
In the kitchen, two passionate chefs lead the way – French chef Julien Moreau and Portuguese master of flavors Isabel Vasconcelos. Together, they create a menu that merges classic French techniques with the relaxed, oceanic soul of Portugal. For starters – octopus carpaccio served with creamy roasted garlic aioli, drops of lime, and a hint of pink pepper. Then, their iconic dish – braised gilt-head bream in a saffron beurre blanc sauce, served with caramelized endive and celery purée. And for dessert? A delicate fig tart with vanilla mascarpone and a drop of white wine.
It is impossible to talk about Black Trumpet without mentioning the wines and music. The wine list is like a story – each bottle has its own history, its own terroir, and the emotions it evokes. During my last visit, I tried a bottle of Quinta do Noval LBV, whose notes of blackberry and chocolate accentuated the taste of Portuguese cheeses – serra da estrela, azeitão, and a touch of fresh figs.
A Taste That Plays on the Senses.
In the evening, the restaurant transforms into an artists’ salon. Jazz flows from the speakers, and sometimes someone exceptional takes the stage – Luiz da Silva and his melancholic fado, American pianist Clara Duval, whose hands dance over the keys in a swing rhythm. One night, as I sat with a glass of crisp vinho verde, I felt the rhythm of the percussion pulsing through my veins.
More Than a Restaurant – A Meeting Place
This is a place where flavors connect with the soul. Black Trumpet does not just nourish – it inspires. The jazz nights, DJ evenings, and exhibitions of local painters and photographers make it a space for those seeking more than just a dinner. I will always remember that evening when raindrops trickled down the windows, and I, wrapped in a soft shawl, listened to the warm sounds of the double bass, gazing at the blurred lights of Lisbon. Sometimes a place is not just a space – it is an emotion that lingers.
